Liability vs. Full Coverage: What's the Difference?
This is the most basic question in auto insurance, and a lot of drivers still can't answer it clearly. Here's the plain version.
Liability coverage
Liability insurance pays for damage and injuries you cause to other people when you're at fault in an accident. It covers their car, their medical bills, and legal costs if you're sued. It does not pay a cent to repair your own vehicle or cover your own medical bills. Every state requires some minimum amount of liability coverage to legally drive, which is why it's the baseline every policy includes.
Full coverage
"Full coverage" isn't actually one specific coverage type, it's a common way of describing liability coverage plus two additional pieces: collision and comprehensive.
Collision pays to repair or replace your own vehicle after an accident, regardless of who's at fault.
Comprehensive covers damage to your own vehicle from things other than a collision: theft, vandalism, weather, hitting an animal, a cracked windshield.
Together, liability plus collision plus comprehensive is what people mean when they say "full coverage."
Why the difference actually matters
If you only carry liability and you cause an accident, or your car is stolen, or a tree falls on it, you're paying out of pocket to fix or replace your own vehicle. Liability protects other people from your mistakes. Full coverage protects you too.
Which one do you actually need?
If you own your car outright and it's not worth much, liability-only might be a reasonable call, since the cost of collision and comprehensive coverage could outweigh what your car is even worth to replace. If you're financing or leasing your vehicle, your lender almost always requires full coverage, since they have a financial interest in the car until it's paid off. For most drivers with a car worth protecting, full coverage is the safer default.
