How Much Auto Coverage Do You Actually Need?
The state minimum is exactly that: a minimum, set by law, not a recommendation for what actually protects you. A lot of drivers carry it because it's the cheapest legal option, without realizing how exposed it leaves them if they cause a serious accident.
Why the minimum usually isn't enough
If you're at fault in a serious accident and your liability limits are too low, the other driver's medical bills or property damage can exceed what your policy pays. When that happens, you're personally on the hook for the rest, which can mean a lawsuit against your savings, your home, or your future wages. Liability limits exist to protect what you have, and low limits protect very little of it.
What to actually think through
What you have to lose. The more assets, savings, and future income you have, the more liability coverage makes sense, since that's what's actually at risk in a lawsuit.
Your vehicle's value. If your car is financed or worth protecting, collision and comprehensive coverage (see Liability vs. Full Coverage: What's the Difference?) matter, not just liability.
Uninsured and underinsured drivers. A meaningful number of drivers on the road carry little to no insurance. Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage Explained covers what happens if one of them hits you.
Your deductible. A lower deductible means less out-of-pocket cost after a claim, but a higher premium. This is a real tradeoff worth thinking through deliberately, not defaulting to whatever's cheapest today.
The mistake we see most often
Carrying the state minimum because it's cheap, without ever running the "what if" scenario: what if I cause a serious accident and the other person's bills are far higher than my coverage. That gap becomes a personal financial problem, not an insurance one.
