Renters Insurance for Roommates: Who Needs Their Own Policy?

"My roommate already has renters insurance, so we're covered" is one of the more common and more risky assumptions we hear. In most cases, it's not true, and finding that out after something's already been stolen or damaged is a rough way to learn it.

Why one policy usually doesn't cover everyone

A renters policy is written for the named policyholder, and typically for their belongings specifically, not for anyone else living in the unit. If your roommate's laptop is stolen and your roommate has a policy, that's covered. If your laptop is stolen at the same time and you're not on that policy, it generally isn't, because you're not the policyholder and your belongings were never part of what was insured.

The exception: being named on the same policy

Some carriers allow multiple roommates to be added to a single policy, similar to how a couple might share one policy. If this is set up correctly and everyone's belongings are accounted for, one policy really can cover multiple people. The key word is correctly, this needs to be confirmed directly with the carrier, not assumed.

Why separate policies are usually simpler anyway

Even when a shared policy is possible, separate individual policies often make more sense. Everyone's belongings, and everyone's liability, stay clearly separated. If a claim happens, it's clear whose coverage applies and whose belongings are involved, instead of untangling a shared policy after the fact. It also means one roommate's claims history doesn't affect another roommate's future rates.

What to actually do

Don't assume. Ask directly: is everyone in this unit covered under this policy, by name, for their own belongings? If the answer isn't a clear yes, get your own policy. It's inexpensive enough that "just to be safe" is a reasonable default.
