Accident-Only vs. Accident & Illness Plans: What's the Difference?

Most pet insurance plans fall into one of two categories, and the difference between them is bigger than the names suggest.

Accident-only plans

These cover injuries: things like being hit by a car, swallowing a foreign object, broken bones, or cuts requiring stitches. They don't cover illnesses, so a diagnosis like cancer, an infection, or a chronic condition like diabetes wouldn't be covered under this type of plan. Accident-only plans are the more affordable option, since they cover a narrower set of risks.

Accident and illness plans

These cover everything an accident-only plan does, plus illnesses: infections, chronic conditions, cancer, digestive issues, and more. This is the more complete option, and the one most pet owners actually mean when they picture "pet insurance." It costs more than accident-only coverage, but it protects against a much wider range of what can actually go wrong with a pet's health.

Why the difference matters more than it sounds

Accidents are unpredictable but relatively rare for most pets. Illness is far more common over a pet's lifetime, especially as they age. An accident-only plan leaves a real gap: exactly the kind of unexpected, expensive diagnosis that pet insurance exists to protect against in the first place.

Which one actually makes sense

If budget is a real constraint and you mainly want protection against sudden injuries, accident-only is better than no coverage at all. But if the goal is genuinely not having to choose between your pet's health and your finances, accident and illness coverage is where that protection actually lives. This becomes especially relevant as your pet ages, see Is Pet Insurance Worth It for an Older Dog or Cat? for that side of the decision.
