What to Do After a Car Accident (Insurance Checklist)

Nobody thinks clearly right after a car accident, which is exactly why it helps to know the steps ahead of time instead of trying to figure them out in the moment.

Step 1: Check for injuries and get to safety

Before anything else, check yourself and everyone else involved for injuries, and if it's safe to do so, move vehicles out of traffic. Call 911 if anyone's hurt or if the accident is serious enough to need police involvement.

Step 2: Call the police, even for minor accidents

A police report creates an official record of what happened, which matters for your claim, especially if fault is disputed. Don't skip this because the damage looks minor.

Step 3: Exchange information

Get the other driver's name, contact information, insurance company and policy number, and license plate. Don't discuss fault or apologize at the scene, that's for the claims process to sort out, not a roadside conversation.

Step 4: Document everything

Photos of all vehicles involved, the damage, the accident scene, license plates, and any visible injuries. Get contact information for any witnesses too. This documentation is often the difference between a smooth claim and a disputed one.

Step 5: Contact your agent or carrier promptly

Report the accident as soon as reasonably possible, even if you think you weren't at fault. This starts your claim and gets you guidance on next steps, including how repairs and any medical treatment will be handled.

Step 6: Get a repair estimate

Your carrier will typically direct you to get your vehicle assessed, either through their own adjuster or an approved repair shop, to determine the cost of repairs or whether the vehicle is a total loss.

Step 7: Follow up on medical care

Even if you feel fine immediately after an accident, some injuries don't show symptoms right away. If anything feels off in the following days, get checked out, and keep your carrier informed if it's related to the accident.

The one habit that makes all of this easier

Keep your insurance information easily accessible, in your car and on your phone, so you're not scrambling for it in a stressful moment. And know who to call. Having an actual agent, not just a claims hotline, makes this whole process less overwhelming.
